Ski essentials - baselayers, onepiece, hoodies & jackets

featured in News & reviews Author Andy Malton, Latest Gear Reviewer Updated

Autumn is always an exciting time to be a gear freak. September rolls around, manufacturers websites are updated with new gear and clothing for the upcoming season as everyone's thoughts start to turn to winter..

One brand that always manages to turn heads is Norrona. Few brands can claim such a distinctive and recognisable aesthetic, and few brands have such strong line of iconic products. The Norrona range for winter 2016 / 2017 is looking as good as ever, so for this month’s gear slot I thought I’d run through some highlights.

Super Hoodie and Onepiece

Norrona have a new line of baselayers this winter. Both Polartec and Merino Wool fabrics feature in some pretty technical looking garments. The Super Hoodie is the stand out style in the new baselayer range. It’s a hooded baselayer (or light midlayer) built from brilliant Polartec Powerdry High Efficiency fabric. It has a trim cut, a low profile hood and classic Norrona style lines. It looks set to be a classic. The Super Hoodie is available in both Men’s and Women’s fit and colours.

The Super One Piece looks perfect for cold days on skis or a board. No draughty gaps for snow to find its way into, plus it has a chest pocket and rear zip for ventilation and making calls of nature a little easier.

Wool Hoody

Similar to the Super Hoodie, the Wool Hoodie has a slightly more relaxed style, although it’s still very much an advanced baselayer for cold conditions. Features differ a little from the Super Hoodie the Wool Hoodie has a slightly different fit and a cosy looking kangaroo style hand pocket. Norrona have used a very high quality Merino Wool to build the Wool Hoody. 17.5 microns is very fine and the fabric has an 11% nylon content for extra durability. The fabric comes in at 170gm/m2 a nice weight for multi activity use and one that should strike a good balance between warmth, breathability and drying time.

Lofoten GoreTex Pro Jacket

Undoubtedly the most iconic of all Norona products, the Lofoten Jacket still performs as well as any high end shell out there, and it still turns heads in the gondola too. GoreTex Pro fabric is super tough, massively weather resistant yet breathable to boot and the multitude of features like a helmet compatible hood and wrist gaiters ensure protection in nasty conditions.

Lofoten GoreTex Primaloft Jacket

Like the traditional Lofoten Jacket, but with bags of Primaloft insulation inside. Although not cheap, the Lofoten Primaloft would serve as both a cold weather ski jacket and an everyday winter jacket too. Plus the fabrics and quality of construction should mean it will last for years.

Falketind Warm1 Hoodie

The Falketind Warm1 Hoodie has been unchanged in the Norrona range for years now. It’s a simple, warm hoodie made with Polartec fleece that works just as well for everyday use as it does in the mountains. The Falketind Warm1 Hoodie manages to combine technical details like thumb loops and an articulated fit with a relaxed aesthetic which makes it the perfect crossover piece.

Tamok GoreTex Jacket

The Tamok range is new for this winter. Named after the legendary powder filled valley in the Norwegian Arctic, it’s a line aimed at the modern backcountry skier and snowboarder who wants to wear technical clothing but doesn’t want to look like an alpine climber. The long cut and military style lines and details achieve this aim nicely yet the fabric and build quality is on a par with other Norrona garments like the Lofoten. The Tamok GoreTex Jacket is also available in a limited edition camo colourway which will no doubt be pretty popular.
